He was a teacher in the Hunter Valley from early 1860s to 1876 (recorded at Lochinvar 1869 when bankrupt, and 1874, Dunmore/Hinton 1875), when he moved to Sydney as first headmaster (initially the only teacher) at Coogee Public School, Belmore Rd (then known as Randwick). He retired from there 1891, then had a private school in Randwick for about 2 years before moving to Marrickville in 1894, Kensington Rd, Summer Hill 1896, Cecil St, Ashfield 1903, and Rockdale in 1906, where he died.
