2. | Major Henry Robert Oakes, H.E.I.C. was born on 19 Oct 1788 in Fort St George, India; died on 9 Sep 1842 in Kempsey, NSW. Notes:
He migrated to Van Diemans Land in 1824 with his family where he took up a 2000 acre grant at Eastern Marshes. He then lived at Redlands, New Norfolk, which he leased.
In 1834 he was commissioned Lieutenant Governor's Envoy to New Zealand. In 1837 he returned to Australia and settled on the MacLeay River as Crown Land Commissioner.
Henry married Harriet MacDonald on 16 Feb 1820 in Madras, India. Harriet (daughter of Ewen MacDonald, of Griminish and Jane Bruce) was born on 5 Sep 1799; died on 27 Nov 1847 in Tasmania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
