    Other Events:

    • Ancestor of Line: [Hector4] HECTOR CAMERON - LOVETT CAMERONS

    Notes:

Merchant in Glasgow from at least 1770, listed in 1787 as Woollen and Linen-Draper,at Gallowgate. He is recorded as witnessing a sasine for Ewen Cameron of Glenevis in 1777 at Edinburgh.

Family tradition has long described him as a younger son of Dr Archibald Cameron. Hector is an unlikely name for a son of Archibald and Jean, and there is no evidence to suggest such a person may exist. The tradition may well come from a skewed story concerning Hector's first wife, Isabel Cameron, possibly the same person as Bell, known posthumous daughter of Archibald.

If Hector followed something of the usual naming pattern for his children with Isabel, his parents could be Hugh Cameron and Catherine - and Catherine is likely to be a Maclean where the name Hector is common. (Of course for the standard pattern Catherine should refer to Isabel's mother)

Such a family has been noted in Glasgow about the right time, though as yet no record of Hector's birth has been found. Hugh Cameron and Kathryn McLean had three children baptised in Glasgow, David 9 Sep 1739, Daniel 15 Jul 1742, and Hugh 24 Aug 1744. No other children were born to this family in Glasgow between 1730 and 1750, so it cannot be accepted as certain that this family is connected to Hector.

Hector Cameron is said to have made a will in Glasgow 1791, not available in Scottish Wills index.
Their small property at Oban was sold by guardians of their surviving son (SRO).

(The Glasgow register shows a Hector Cameron witness, with a Donald and a Hugh Cameron, to baptism of children of Alexander Cameron, sower or sawer, and Marjory Cameron in 1786-90. ?relevant)

Hector married Janet Maclean on 22 Jul 1774 in Glasgow. Janet (daughter of John Maclean and Margaret Campbell) died on 20 May 1788 in Glasgow; was buried in Ramshorn and Blackfriars Church, Glasgow. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
