He enlisted in the 79th Regiment (Cameron Highlanders) at its inception in August 1793, aged 18 and remained in that regiment as a Drummer until January 1818, serving in active battles at least up to Toulouse in April 1814. Subsequently a Chelsea (out-) Pensioner He migrated to NZ per "Blenheim" from Greenock, arriving Wellington 27 Dec 1840, then on to NSW ca 1842, where he worked as farm labourer, possibly for Thomas Bartie, of "Rosebanks", near Hinton
