  1. 12.  Dr George Bennett, MD. FRCS was born on 31 Jan 1804 in Plymouth; died on 29 Sep 1893 in Sydney; was buried in Camperdown, NSW.

    Notes:

    son of William Lang Bennett, organist, and Elizabeth Debell.

    As surgeon-naturalist aboard the "Sophia", Bennett visited Australia in 1829-32 and published "Wanderings in New South Wales...Journal of a Naturalist" (London 1834). He was the first person to find a specimen of a living Pearly Nautilus. He is also known for his work on the Platypus, possibly the first to capture one alive.
    He returned to Australia permanently in 1836 as a medical practioner and became associated with the Zoological Society and the Australian Museum (as curator).

    He had two further marriages.

    George married Julia Anne Luduvina da Silva Cameron on 28 Nov 1835 in St James Church, Sydney. Julia (daughter of Lt. Colonel Charles Cameron, 3rd Regt (Buffs) and Ludovina Rosa da Silva) was born in 1818; died on 13 Jun 1846 in Sydney; was buried in Devonshire St Cemetery (C of E), later moved to La Perouse (No 112).   2. 13.  Julia Anne Luduvina da Silva Cameron was born in 1818 (daughter of Lt. Colonel Charles Cameron, 3rd Regt (Buffs) and Ludovina Rosa da Silva); died on 13 Jun 1846 in Sydney; was buried in Devonshire St Cemetery (C of E), later moved to La Perouse (No 112).

    Died:
    Suicide, while depressed, by ingesting prussic acid. A full account is given in the Sydney Sentinel 18 June 1846, p. 2.
