Initially a schoolteacher at Parkhaugh National School, Manning River, he came to Sydney to become a Commission Agent/Produce Merchant in Sussex St (nos 64, 94, 86) 1876-95. This John Cameron bought land at Bishopsthorpe estate, Glebe in 1877. He was said to be in turn Mayor of Balmain (1885), Manly (1889,90,91) and Strathfield, - Strathfield council history has no mention of him in the list of Mayors. He was noted as J.P. in Manly history. He lived at Reynolds St, Balmain 1876; Shannon Grove, Ewenton St, Balmain 1877-87; Euroka, Victoria Pde, Manly 1888-92 (land owned since 1884); Euroka, Homebush Rd, Strathfield 1893. He was probably the John Cameron, snr, JP, who lived at "Cremona", Everton St, Burwood (with John, junior) 1894 to 1907 at least. (In 1893 there was a J. Cameron, Commission Agent at 191 Sussex St, (probably living that year at "Wymer", Arthur St, Ashfield) and from 1898 to at least 1913 a J. Cameron was Commission Agent at 157 Sussex St. From 1894-1906, J. Cameron & Co, Commission Agents, had a store at 8 Wharf St, and from 1905 John Cameron & Co were Produce Merchants at 73 Military Rd, Nth Sydney. It is not certain how many John Camerons these represent.)
John married Johanna Lile Shearer on 5 Jan 1867 in Clarence River, NSW. Johanna was born in 1848; died on 15 May 1905 in Strathfield, NSW; was buried on 16 May 1905 in Balmain. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
