Probably born 28 Sep 1820, Urquhart (ref. LDS). Another birth date of 28 Sep 1828, Glenelg has been given.

Migrated with family arriving 18 Oct 1848 on "Tasman" from Plymouth 15 Jun 1848, recorded as labourer, aged 27, born Urquhart.

He was a tailor who from 1853 owned the Balmoral Castle Hotel, Prahran. It was burnt down in 1857 and he sold the hotel site and went back to being a tailor once more on the corner of High and York St, Prahran.
