Merchant in Corpach (Stewart, PR 1831,37). At marriage in 1837 he was described as Mr Charles Cameron, of Annat (near Corpach)

He was living at Fassifern House at time of 1841 census. Several other families came under the same heading, probably on part of the Fassifern estate. He was described as of independent means.

A letter from his brother Thomas to George said that he planned to leave for Australia in 1841.

He arrived (as Charles Cameron, Esq) with his second wife and 2 children (and her sister Agnes Thomson) per "James Moran" in Sydney 6 Oct 1841. He held the licence for the Pyrmont Hotel from June 1842 to December 1846. He later moved to Adelaide where he died in 1848, at the Union Inn, West Terrace

    Notes:

There is as yet no documentary evidence to confirm his position in the family.

The printed version of his gravestone gives the date above, aged 71. Other readings have suggested "aged 74", and a death date of 12 Mar 1825.

He was listed as Lt. in 1791-2, Captain of 79th Regiment from 19 Aug 1793. Listed as Lieutenant, paying rent of 40 pounds at Achintore, Jan 1778, and at his marriage in 1784.

He was active at Strone from 1779, presumably after his brother's death, perhaps holding the Tack, while his cousin John had a lease.

He was Master of Lodge Fort William No 43 for many of the years between 1791 and 1816.

Donald married Isabella Cochrane in 1796. Isabella was christened on 7 Jun 1777 in St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh; died on 20 Jan 1849 in Strone . [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He served as Captain in Lochiel's regiment during the '45. In 1755 he was Sergeant in Hume's Regiment of Foot, and in 1763 Lieutenant in the 2nd Virginia Provincial Regiment, "with a numerous family of children (Ref. Chris Doak, Denis Cameron)

Described as Captain of Foot in North America by his brother Alexander in a valuation roll of 1761.
Also In West Indies 1766 "a brother of Stronse" (Ref. Scotland's Empire)

John married Jannet McIntosh. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Jannet McIntosh

    Notes:

She is recorded as holding the tack of Strone for her husband in 1755.

    Died:
    aged 67 years

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Dugald Cameron, 13th of Strone died in ca 1740.

    Other Events:

    • Ancestor of Line: [Strone] CAMERONS or MACGILLONIES of STRONE

    Notes:

His grandfather was John Cameron of Strone who died March 1687, husband of Anna who survived him and father of Alexander, Donald, Margaret and Mary Cameron (Testament Dative of 12 Dec 1687).

His father was presumably Alexander, not mentioned in Bygone Lochaber or Stewart's The Camerons.

What little is known of the earlier generations of the Camerons of Strone can be seen in the standard texts, showing their descent from the Macgillonies.

    "living 1717,25,37"

There has been some uncertainty about the details of the 18th century generations, with many conflicting "facts" in print. Some of these have been proven wrong by recently found legal documents and wills.

The following seems to be a reasonable reading of the information available at the present time. Later generations are on a firmer footing.

    Died:
    before 1745

Dugald married Jean McBean. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Jean McBean

    Notes:

Ref. Will of Alexander Cameron of Achnaherry, 1762. She apparently married this Alexander Cameron after the death of her husband Dugald, without issue.

    Children:
    1. 4. John Cameron, of Strone died after 1773.
    2. Alexander Cameron died in 1772.
    3. Margaret Cameron died young, after first child.
    4. Mary Cameron
    5. Duncan Cameron died in ca 1772.
