  Notes	son of William Lang Bennett, organist, and Elizabeth Debell. As surgeon-naturalist aboard the "Sophia", Bennett visited Australia in 1829-32 and published "Wanderings in New South Wales...Journal of a Naturalist" (London 1834). He was the first person to find a specimen of a living Pearly Nautilus. He is also known for his work on the Platypus, possibly the first to capture one alive. He returned to Australia permanently in 1836 as a medical practioner and became associated with the Zoological Society and the Australian Museum (as curator). He had two further marriages.
