4. | Lieut. Allan Cameron (1.Isobel1) died in ca 2 Nov 1730 in Rome; was buried in Monte Testacco. Notes:
Agent for King James VIII and III, travelling frequently between France and England in 1714-15 and coming with him to Scotland in December 1715.
He died as Col. Cameron in Rome, "one of the Gentlemen of the Bedchamber to the Chevalier de St George (alias the Pretender)" Ref. Monthly Chronicle, London, November 1730.

Notes:
He succeeded in 1716, probably not yet 21, although his birth date has been traditionally given as 1695. However his parents were probably married 1696. Clunes thought he was born ca 1700 (Stewart p. 307).
His history is well recorded elsewhere, particularly his pivotal part in the '45.
In Sep 1746 he went to France in exile, living with his family at Fontainebleau.
His death "at Paris" was reported in London Evening Post 22 Oct 1748 "a few days ago".
Bergues is just south of the Belgian border, near Dunkirk.

Notes:
2nd son of John Cameron of Lochiel, 18th Chief of Clan Cameron.
About 1721 he went to West Indies and sold (to Ewen Drummond, his cousin) the estate given him by his father, as the start of his business career (Stewart p. 307).
Imprisoned in Edinburgh, and then banished to Alnwick in 1755 for 10 years, returning ca 1768
John married Jean Campbell on 23 Aug 1734 in Kenmore, Perthshire. Jean (daughter of John Campbell, 5th of Achalader, Perthshire and Katherine Cameron) died on ca Apr 1783. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Unmarried, a Jesuit priest who converted to Catholicism and began his studies at Douai in 1730 when a letter stated he was aged 30.

In November 1745 she was visited by her father, Old Lochiel at her town house Balhaldie Close, Dunblane.
She has been described by Burke's Landed Gentry and Somerled MacMillan as married to Dugald Cameron of Strone. No documentary evidence of this has been seen. Mackenzie and Stewart describe her as Miss Peggy, unmarried.

13. | Ewen Cameron (2.John2, 1.Isobel1) Notes:
4th son, according to Clunes (Stewart p. 309). Generally recorded as youngest son.
He had been in the West Indies prior to 1730 with his brother Alexander. He emigrated 1734 as a planter to the estate his grandfather Ewan had bought in Jamaica ("with a cargo of people from Maryborough"). He died before 1754, said to be a rich man. No known issue.

45. | John Cameron, 20th Lochiel (9.Donald3, 2.John2, 1.Isobel1) was born in ca 1732-4; died on 10 Nov 1762 in Edinburgh; was buried in Kilmallie. Notes:
Captain in the Albany Regiment from 1747.
He succeeded as Lochiel in 1748 at about 14-16 years of age on his father's death.
In April 1757 he was detained at Dover, described as 23 years of age, 10 years a Captain in the French service and hoping to get employment in Britain (Cheshire Advertiser).
Went to Scotland in 1759 but had no home there and lived in London and Edinburgh.
He died, unmarried, Edinburgh, Nov 1762, aged 30 years, bur. Kilmallie, at the insistence of his sister Ann

She lived with John Cameron of Fassifern (her uncle) at some time from 1755 to 1762 in Alnwick (Northumberland) while he was in exile. She became a nun in Carmelite Convent, Paris and eventually Lady Abbess before the family lost track of her (? after 1793-4 Reign of Terror). Donald visited her in Paris many times

She was in Edinburgh with her brother John when he died in 1762 and in Britain with her brother Charles in 1763, again in Edinburgh 1765, leaving May 1766. In Sep 1829 she was apparently living with or near Mrs Anne (Abercromby) Cameron in England (see letter from Sir Walter Scott, Stewart p. 294)

52. | Charles Cameron, 21st Lochiel (9.Donald3, 2.John2, 1.Isobel1) was born in ca 1747/8 in Lochaber (or France); died on 31 Aug 1776 in place uncertain. Notes:
Episcopalian. Grew up in France and succeeded in 1762 on brother's death, aged about 15. Ensign and later Captain in 30th Foot (General Parsloe's Regiment) - Commission 26th June, 1765, bought for £400. He transferred to 71st Fraser Highlanders in 1775 and raised a company, but died before leaving for America. He had a lease of Glendessary portion of Annexed estate.
In 1770 he was described by Charles Cameron of Worcester (b. Jul 1748) as "a few months older than I am". (Celtic Monthly Mar 1903)
Charles married Martha Marshall on 1 Nov 1767 in Gibraltar. Martha was born in ca 1741; died on 13 May 1816 in Berwick upon Tweed; was buried on 18 May 1816 in Berwick upon Tweed. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Initially of Inverscaddle, Guardian or curator first for his cousin Charles 21st of Lochiel (1764) and later for the young Donald Cameron, 22nd of Lochiel. He bought Callart estate in 1787, and from at least 1816 lived at Arthurstone, nr Meigle, Perthshire. - see Stewart, p. 216,7
Ewen married Louisa Campbell on 2 Nov 1767. Louisa (daughter of Duncan Campbell and Mary Macpherson) was born in ca 1747; died on 14 Oct 1777 in Fassifern. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Of old 78th Regt (1757-1763), gazetted Lieut. 30 Sep 1758, retired on half pay 1763.
Capt. in 1764, died as Lieut on half pay 1817
He was at the fall of Quebec in September 1759, in Capt. Hugh Cameron's company, having arrived in Virginia from Greenock in June 1759. However he is listed as sailing with the regiment for Louisbourg (Cape Breton Island) in 1758. He was wounded at Ste-Foy, Quebec on 28 Apr 1760.
He leased Coanich (Caonich, on the northern shore of Loch Arkaig) in 1764, but was not there that year.
He was unmarried in 1764/5, when letters show he had been paying unwelcome court to the eldest daughter of one Jos. Burrell of Alnwyck (who married Ann Forster 29 Aug 1741. Mary Burrel bapt. 21 Sep 1742, Chatton, nr Alnwyck). However Lloyd's Evening Post of 23 Dec 1765 reports his marriage in Edinburgh to Miss Burrel, dau. of - Burrel of Hetton House, Northumberland. No other record of this marriage has been found. He still felt ill used by the Burrel family in 1868 (letter from Donald the Banker)
No descendants of Donald Cameron appear to be recorded in "official" family histories, but there are several families with apparently authentic claims stemming from early family tradition as detailed below. The third and fourth were probably legitimate.
A letter, written from Westfield, nr Newcastle, in July 1780 to his brother Ewen mentions (but does not name) his wife, probably Catherine.

Her will describes her as Mrs Mary Cameron of Fassifern, sister of Archibald Cameron, without mention of her husband or children. Her nephew Sir Duncan Cameron was executor (ref. Chris Doak).
